According to university guidelines
Allowances are paid to technicians for work in the Animal and Plant Houses at weekends and on Bank Holidays and University Closure Days according to an agreed rota.
‘Allowances paid to Technicians (including Trainees) for work in the Plant Houses or BMSU (or similar) at Weekends, Public Holidays and University Closure Days.
With effect from 1 August 2013
- To receive the allowance detailed below, technicians must to be available to work at weekends, public holidays and university closure days, on a rotational basis, to carry out essential work in the Plant Houses or BMSU (or similar). The rota will be agreed, between the technician and the line manager, as far in advance as possible.
- TS Levels 1-5 (plus Trainee Technicians) are entitled to be paid these allowances, if they participate in the rota and it is part of their contract of employment to do so.
- Technicians who are contractually required to participate in a rota to carry out essential work on a weekend, public holiday or university closure day will receive extra payments as detailed below.
|0-2 hours worked||2-3 hours worked||3+ hours worked|
|Weekends (per day)||£46.68||£64.02||£81.37|
|Public Holidays and university Closure Days (per day)||£58.34||£80.01||£101.70|
These allowances will increase as applicable in line with the annual pay award. The amounts above are based on the August 2013 salary award.
- Where a Technician carries out this essential extra work on a public holiday or university closure day, time-off-in-lieu (TOIL) for the hours worked will be at 1:1 for the actual hours worked. Any TOIL must be taken by staff within the 30 day period within which it was awarded to prevent a build up of time owing. If TOIL cannot be taken during the day period, managers have the option of paying this at single time, at the base hourly rate’
Animal technicians were always treated differently from other staff regarding overtime because of the regular nature of the ‘out of hours’ work
Make sure your team leader/Head of Department does not confuse the overtime allowance for animal technicians with the overtime rates for other technicians which state
‘Single-time overtime payments are usually made for part-time staff working additional hours below the full-time hours for the post. They can also be paid to staff working on Bank Holidays or University Closure Days.
Overtime hours above the full-time hours for the post will normally be paid at time-and-a-half for staff at Levels 1 to 3.
Double-time overtime above the full-time hours for the post for Levels 1 to 3 is usually paid only for working above the standard daily hours on Bank Holidays and University Closure Days.
Staff at Level 4 and above do not qualify for overtime payments or time-off-in-lieu (TOIL) for overtime worked.’
Although not many departments operate this cruel policy which needs to be challenged if the goodwill of Grade 4 technicians is being abused.
